What Is A Periodontal Scaling And Root Planing?

A scaling and root planing is a procedure that involves removing heavy buildup and preventing the progression of gum disease. Gum disease is a lot more common than you might think. The disease causes pocketing around each tooth and can affect both the gums and the underlying bone. To prevent the disease from getting worse, we recommend a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing.

Why Would Someone Need A Periodontal Scaling And Root Planing?

The main reason someone would need a deep cleaning is because they have gum disease. Nearly half of all adults have some form of gum disease and if left untreated, it can cause loose, damaged teeth and underlying bone loss. If you’re looking to keep your teeth as healthy as possible, we recommend scaling and root planing. The procedure can be done in conjunction with other periodontal treatments.

We will examine your teeth carefully before determining if bonding is right for you. Most of our patients who either want or need bonding can successfully have it placed. If the tooth is severely damaged or if you’re experiencing pain, other treatments may be necessary. Older bonding material can be easily replaced by our team in the office.

What Happens During The Periodontal Scaling And Root Planing Process?

We start by numbing an entire side of your mouth. The next step is for our hygienist to clear away all hardened plaque and buildup from the teeth. The hygienist then works further down below the gum line to remove bacteria and plaque. The gums are rinsed thoroughly and you’ll be set to head home. You will come back in to have the other side of your mouth treated similarly.
